The Whole Child: Monday Group 9.25.17 & 10.2.17

October 5, 2017

A new season brings new changes and new experiences!

*Shadow Hunt*

We went hunting for shadows on our nature walk! We read Lines That Wiggle before our walk which helped spark our hunt! Our friends enjoyed looking for different kinds of lines to trace.

*Outdoor Creative Play*

Thanks to the beautiful weather we have had a never-ending opportunity to explore invitations outdoors! Introducing liquid watercolors to our friends encouraged them to invent new colors. We delved further into shapes by studying circles. We painted cylinder tubes and used paint dobbers for pointillism-inspired masterpieces. We used tree trunks and spools to construct tall towers together.

*Circle Exploration*

We continued our play with circles inside with finger painting and collaging with circle punches.

*Fall Floor Book*

Together we welcomed our new season of Fall! We talked about what we already knew about Fall and what we could see outside in Fall. This little brainstorm session was the perfect introduction to our new invitations.

*Fall Colors Exploration*

We brought back our liquid watercolor color mixing invitation after observing how much our friends enjoyed it the previous week. This time we focused only on warm and Fall colors. E and C worked together to make new colors. "We're going to have to do a lot of hard work to make brown." - E The pair took the invitation further by using the pipettes to transport water. They used the eye droppers to make "wood disappear" and to water the plants and birds. It's great to witness small acts of compassion for nature from these lovely little kiddos. :-)

EG came over to use the pipettes to play vet. As she picked up a pipette full of watercolor she walked over to the sidewalk and dropped the liquid on the concrete. Afterwards she noticed that the liquid made visible marks on the concrete and that hers "looked like a P!" She was very excited to show her friends that you could make letters on the sidewalk with the watercolors! She demonstrated how she could make an E with the red colors and encouraged her friends to do the same. EG's leadership skills shine every day through her confidence and willingness to help her friends achieve new goals.

*Leaf Investigation*

Using the leaves we collected on our nature walks, we examined size and colors. We used magnifying glasses to get an up close view of the leaves and see their small color variations and textures. We compared leaves by looking at their sizes. Focusing on large leaves, our friends used tape to attach them to the appropriate group.

*Tube Creative Play*

This week we used the cylinder tubes we painted previously during our outdoor creative play. Our friends organized them by size and enjoyed using them as props in dramatic play. Our nice kiddos turned into robots by putting their arms through the tubes! Then the tubes transformed into microphones and telescopes.

*A SQUIRREL HOME*

During our visit to the park, our friends found a huge hole in a tree. "This MUST be a squirrel's home!" The kiddos then spent their time gathering acorns and nuts for the squirrel. We can't wait to visit next week and see if the acorns are still in the hole!

We have some of the SWEETEST kiddos! One of my favorite quotes from this week came from E, "I love using nice manners!"

I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next week!
